Teaching

At ETH Zurich

Philipp Aerni teaches 'Technology and Innovation for Development' (TI4D) and 'History of Food and Agriculture' (HFA) at ETH Zürich. TI4D illustrates how technology and innovation may contribute to sustainable development if institutional framework conditions create the right incentives. The course discusses the challenges associated with technological change from an interdisciplinary and practice-oriented perspective taking into account legal, economic, anthropological and development aspects. HFA points at the importance of the history of food and agriculture in understanding the emergence of modern agriculture and public resistance toward industrial farming. The lecture discusses the evolution of agriculture and its impact on social structures, human health and the environment from an anthropological, a cultural, a political and a technological point of view.
